Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve never worked with a budget before or had to pay your\nown rent \u2013 and not to mention bills. It all seems like it\u2019s going to be too\nexpensive. Don\u2019t fret, we\u2019ve got you covered!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We here at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.check.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Creddible<\/a> know how important budgeting is. For example, a single from Cardiff to London is \u00a347.30 full price.\nHowever, if you\u2019re prepared you can get advance tickets which will be\nconsiderably cheaper. These tickets are released 12 weeks early, so you\u2019ll have\nto put a date in your calendar \u2013 thetrainline.com will give you a free alert.\nThe same journey costs \u00a319 with an advance ticket. That\u2019s a saving of\n\u00a328.30.&nbsp; My best price was a journey from\nSwansea to Brighton for just \u00a33. I still don\u2019t know how I managed it but I was\nquite chuffed that I\u2019d travelled home for Christmas for less than the cost of a\npumpkin spiced latte. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first case, you might be buying your train ticket before\nyou\u2019ve even arrived at university, depending on when you break up for\nChristmas. You can check your University\u2019s website to see when you break up for\nChristmas. Student Unions tend to keep events within the term dates, so you\u2019re\nunlikely to miss out on anything.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Consider_the_coach\"><\/span>Consider the coach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option for travelling home could be a coach. You can\nget prices as cheap as \u00a31 with Megabus (90p with a student card). They take\nlonger, but you\u2019re guaranteed a seat, they often have WiFi and plug sockets,\nand the seats are much more comfortable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_a_railcard\"><\/span>Get a railcard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can now get a railcard if you\u2019re aged between 16 and 30.\nThese take 1\/3 off for off-peak rail fares, including on London Underground.\nThis can sometimes pay for itself in just one journey, so it is well worth the\nmoney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can get loads of 2 for 1 deals on attractions with one\nof these as well \u2013 their website can give you all the information you need: www.railcard.co.uk<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Work_out_a_budget\"><\/span>Work out a budget<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you blow your entire maintenance loan on freshers\u2019\nweek, work out a budget. This is really simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Work_out_your_income\"><\/span>Work out your income:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your loan is split into three payments, but not equally.\nDeal with each term individually, as you\u2019ll need to budget differently for each\none. Take a few minutes to think about how many weeks each payment is covering\nand divide the instalments by this. If you have any grants, do this with them\nas well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you will work part-time, factor this in as well. Work out approximately how much you\u2019ll be earning each month. Divide the monthly amount by 4 to get the weekly amount and add it to your loans and grants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You now have your base weekly amount. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Work_out_your_expenditures\"><\/span>Work out your expenditures:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you need to work out how much you\u2019ll be spending. Think\nabout:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rent <\/li><li>Household bills (gas, electricity, water, broadband)<\/li><li>Mobile phone<\/li><li>TV License <\/li><li>Insurance <\/li><li>Course supplies\/ textbooks<\/li><li>Groceries <\/li><li>Entertainment (going out, cinema etc)<\/li><li>Gym\/Swim memberships <\/li><li>Prescription costs (if you get regular\nmedication)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of these are monthly payments, divide them by 4 to\nget your weekly average. If they\u2019re annual, divide by 52. Textbooks and course\nsupplies may be per term, so divide by the number of weeks in the term. For\nthings like groceries and entertainment, give yourself a weekly budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, total up your expenditures (weekly) and take it away\nfrom your weekly income. Hopefully, this number is a positive one. If so,\nyou\u2019re doing great just stick to your budget and you\u2019ll always have a positive\nbalance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the number you have is a negative one then you need to\nrevisit your budget and reduce some of your spending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Get_a_TOTUM_Card\"><\/span>Get a TOTUM Card<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This was previously the NUS card, but they\u2019ve got a\nbrand-new look and name. This card is only \u00a312 for one year and can save you a\nlot of money! Here are my favourites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>25% off at Domino\u2019s<\/li><li>10% off at Boots<\/li><li>Up to 43% off at London Attractions<\/li><li>Up to 64% off at Alton Towers and Thorpe Park<\/li><li>25% off at ODEON<\/li><li>20% off at Warehouse<\/li><li>25% off at Boohoo<\/li><li>Up to 20% off insurance at Endsleigh<\/li><li>6 months of Amazon Prime<\/li><li>10% off in the Co-op<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can buy these up until the final day of university. So\nyou can reap these rewards up to 3 years after you graduate! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check out the website: www.totum.com. You can also buy these\ndirect from your student union when you\u2019ve arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hold_off_before_buying_textbooks_for_university\"><\/span>Hold off before buying textbooks for university<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one case where holding off on buying something can save you money. If you need a textbook that the previous year has needed, they\u2019ll be likely to run a book swap or sale once the term has started. You\u2019ll be able to arrange to buy used books from those in the year above, and then next year can continue to pass them down. Don\u2019t get into a habit of buying any books brand new, always look on Amazon Marketplace to see if they have any used ones. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\">World of Books<\/a> is also great for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll probably find them un charity shops\ntoo. Check the ones in your university\u2019s city as previous students will\nprobably drop them off before they move away. I studied Literature so I needed\nten to fifteen books <em>every term<\/em>. I found all my term books in an Oxfam bookshop\nonce, saving me hundreds of pounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shop_around_for_banks_at_your_university_town\"><\/span>Shop around for banks at your university town<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the banks are currently competing to get you to sign up for a Student Bank Account with them, which means that they\u2019re offering some amazing rewards just for opening an account with them. When I signed up for HSBC back in 2014, they were offering a \u00a360 Amazon voucher. This gave me some money to spend on making my new room feel more homely, as well as contributing to my books for the first term. Most banks will offer a free overdraft with their student bank accounts, which will be charged a year after you graduate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Santander will give you a free 16-25 railcard, which will save you \u00a370 over the three or four years you\u2019ll be studying.&nbsp; You can also get up to 15% cashback with your spending. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/li><li>HSBC is offering \u00a3100 in cash if you open an account with them. You can also get a wide range of student rewards and offers, accessible via online banking. <\/li><li>NatWest is offering the choice between a tastecard, Amazon Prime, or a National Express Coachcard. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All three of these are great deals and will save you money compared to a regular current account with a chargeable overdraft. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"See_what_you_are_offered_at_university\"><\/span>See what you are offered at university<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you go to Freshers\u2019 Fayre there will be plenty of companies offering you great deals, from insurance to gyms. Make sure you find out what each of them is offering. I managed to get 15% off my contents insurance with Endsleigh, and won enough Nando\u2019s for a year! Plus, look out for us! We\u2019ll be going to the following Universities!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Plymouth University \u2013 Tuesday 17<sup>th<\/sup>\nSeptember <\/li><li>Newman University, Birmingham\u2013 Wednesday 18<sup>th<\/sup>\nSeptember<\/li><li>London City University \u2013 Thursday 19<sup>th<\/sup>\nSeptember <\/li><li>Kings College University \u2013 Friday 20<sup>th<\/sup>\nSeptember <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be in for a chance to win a Nintendo Switch or a pair\nof Beats Headphones if you come say hello!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you have it!
