Take a look around your home and see what you already have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s likely that pencils will just need to be sharpened, and any pens you have hanging around will be sure to have ink left in them. Sure, they won\u2019t have that new stationery feeling but you\u2019ll be helping the environment as well as your wallet! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most schools will give your children notebooks, so you won\u2019t\nneed to get new ones yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Find_out_what_else_you_need_for_school\"><\/span>Find out what else you need for school<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of stationary will be at school already, so you won\u2019t\nneed to buy them, but make sure you have the essentials such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Pencil case \u2013 make sure this holds everything,\nyou don\u2019t want leaking pens at the bottom of the bag<\/li><li>Pens \u2013 be sure to make sure you have the right\ntype of pen \u2013 some schools have a strict no-biro rule or would prefer it if you\ndidn\u2019t use one that needs ink cartridges<\/li><li>Pencils \u2013 a variety of different pencils, as\nwell as coloured pencils<\/li><li>Pencil sharpener \u2013 Make sure you have a good\none, preferably with a casing to hold the sharpenings<\/li><li>Ruler \u2013 a 15cm one will do, as long as you can\nuse it to draw a straight line!<\/li><li>Rubber \u2013 essential for maths lessons!<\/li><li>Calculator \u2013 check to find out if you need a\nscientific calculator, and whether you\u2019ll need a specific brand or type. <\/li><li>Highlighters \u2013 ideally, have a selection of\ncolours.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mix_up_school_lunches\"><\/span>Mix up school lunches<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Like all meal prep, school lunches can be tiring. You want to keep it interesting while being able to make quick lunches. It can be healthier and cheaper to send your kids to school with a packed lunch every day. Here are some ideas for easy back to school savings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fruit_pots\"><\/span>Fruit pots<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use small containers to make little handy fruit pots. Sliced strawberries or blueberries in a small Tupperware are a healthy snack for breaks. You can put frozen fruit such as mango or raspberries in these pots too \u2013 they\u2019ll have defrosted by the time they get around to eating them. Avoid using single-use bags for these. Small containers don\u2019t need to be replaced and don\u2019t add as much waste into the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Water_drinks\"><\/span>Water\/ drinks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re sending your child to school every morning with a\nplastic bottle of water, you\u2019re wasting your money. You have fresh drinking\nwater straight from the tap, just buy your child a refillable water bottle and\nfill it up every day. They\u2019ll be able to fill it up at school as well if they\nrun out.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Yogurt\"><\/span>Yogurt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t necessarily need to buy small pots of yogurt \u2013 buy\na bigger pot at a much lower cost and decant it into small containers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Leftovers\"><\/span>Leftovers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep your child\u2019s lunches interesting, try sending them to school with the leftovers from the night before because if it tastes nice cold, they could be having a different meal every day, and getting all the nutrition they need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Homemade_trail_mix\"><\/span>Homemade trail mix<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try making your own trail mix. Just choose a selection of\ndifferent nuts and seeds that your children like to eat, add in some dried\nfruit and some chocolate chips or buttons. This is really versatile, so you can\nchange it up all the time. Try some of my favourites below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Black forest: dried cranberries, almonds, and dark chocolate<\/li><li>Bakewell: dried cherries or cranberries, almonds, and white chocolate chips or buttons.<\/li><li>Chocolate Peanut: peanuts, dried bananas, chocolate chips, Reese\u2019s Pieces.<\/li><li>Tropical: dried coconut, dried mango, cashews, brazil nuts, dried banana. <\/li><li>Nutella: chocolate chips, hazelnuts, almonds, raisins.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>See if your children want to help you create this. You can make it up together in a large container, and they can take a scoop out each day. When it\u2019s empty, you try out a new recipe. Bear in mind, however, that schools may have policies against nuts in case of allergic reactions. Be sure to check with parents and teachers first!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hack_the_school_uniform\"><\/span>Hack the school uniform<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main supermarkets all sell a range of school uniforms at a considerably lower cost. If you shop around you can find everything you need and still have change in your pocket. Make yourself aware of the dates that the discount stores release their uniforms so you can check it out right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Aldi shoppers are known to have set alarms for the\nmiddle of the night on the day of release to buy school uniforms online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Buy_bigger\"><\/span>Buy bigger<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have fond memories of being sent to school with a hand me\ndown rugby jumper in my PE kit that reached my knees. Don\u2019t go this far \u2013 I\u2019m\npretty sure that rugby jumper would still be too big for me. You\u2019ll benefit\nfrom buying something that\u2019s a little bit roomy for your child to grow into. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll thank yourself later when you realise that you don\u2019t need to buy an entirely new uniform halfway through the school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"See_if_you_can_get_help\"><\/span>See if you can get help<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some parents might be eligible to get help with the costs of school uniforms. Once\nagain \u2013 shop around to see if you can find a great deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would recommend that you don\u2019t go more than one size over your child\u2019s size and that you have your child\u2019s feet measured professionally. Clarks will do this for free, with no expectation for you to buy \u2013 just try to catch them on a quiet day. The final two weeks before schools return are their busiest therefore starting early is a good idea here too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about the quality of the shoe as well. You can buy a\ncheap pair, but how long will they last you? Will you be back in two weeks to\nbuy another pair? Check the reviews online to make sure that your child\u2019s shoes\nwill last until they don\u2019t fit. You might spend more per pair of shoes but save\nmoney in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Textbooks\"><\/span>Textbooks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, you might need to buy revision books or textbooks for your children which could work out at up to \u00a320 each. The first thing I would suggest for back to school savings is to see if anyone moving to the year above have one they\u2019re willing to sell you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your school doesn\u2019t have a book sale or book swap set up, then see if you can set one up. Even if they\u2019re slightly out of date textbooks, they won\u2019t always have changed dramatically. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this isn\u2019t an option, take a look online. Amazon Marketplace has second-hand books, have a look to see if you can get a better price there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Budget_for_school_trips\"><\/span>Budget for school trips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of term ask for information for any trips\nthat you\u2019ll be expected to pay for during the year. If you know about them then\nyou\u2019ll be able to work them into your budget by putting money aside every month\nto pay for them. Think about any extra kit they\u2019ll be expected to have as well.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of the trips require them to travel abroad, check\nthey have a valid passport and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you\u2019re ready! Make sure you take the obligatory photo of your children in their school uniform; you\u2019ll want to look back on them later on.
